Col des Saises

Starting from Flumet the Col des Saises is one that isn?t all that known on the world tour, it has featured during the TDF on several occasions but only ever as a Col in an early part of a stage, never as the key moment! The climb itself is the first one on day 2 of the Raid Alps trip covering 14.8km at an average of 5% making it a constant and steady climb that doesn?t have any hidden secrets in it.

The Climb

The road winds its way up into the forest and does a very good job of sheltering you from the elements ? although if you are riding this early in the day it is likely to be quite cool, so do factor that into your kit choices!

The town of Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe comes after 3km of climbing it also sees the route open right out into more of an Alpine meadow style feel as opposed to the earlier slopes which were more forested. The climb is steady throughout this next sector and even has a 1.5km descent just through the village of Arcaniere. This descent is an indication of what an alpine descent can be like in the valleys and on a few of the more open Cols. The climb continues on around the sweeping right hand bend, with 4km to go from this bend to the summit of the Col.

As you come round the bend its worth remembering to get out of the big ring, and drop yourself down into the little ring, as this is one of the steeper sections of the climb. Once you climb the long straight sector after the right hand bend the road heads back into the forest for the final 4km to the Col. Inside 3km the road takes a right hand bend over a bridge before a left hand bend with the road straightening out as we head for the top. The 2 kilometre to the summit is a ski run over pass that comes over the road. Inside the final km of the climb, the road opens out and flattens off as the run into the summit is a flat one.
